Global learning online
The internet offers a unique opportunity to get to know other young people from around the world, people whom we wouldn’t be likely to come into contact with otherwise. Through the internet, the world is just one click away. With our communication board, the goal is to take advantage of this unique prospect and give young people from all across the world a
platform to make friends, and to learn with and about one another!
The main pedagogic interest of the project is to motivate young people from different cultures and backgrounds to share their lives and ideas with each other. The appeal is that it’s quite simple for members to post reports for one another, especially with content from our everyday lives. With the wide range of content included in these reports, and the potential for feedback and discussion, the report system here at SolarNet compliments the aims of global learning. Through our reporting, we gain new perspectives and insights into other cultures, and we see how our perceptions of other countries and cultures are often influenced by media or stereotypes that do not represent the daily life of other cultures. We are highly motivated to be creative while reporting about our own lives, which enhances our ability to see new perspectives and learn to reflect on those things that impact our own lives but are rarely recognized without some type of comparison.
One unique component of this project is the fact that each participant – regardless of age, gender, color, or culture – is both a student and a teacher.
Through the enthusiasm created by reports and discussion topics, participants gain a natural motivation to present themselves, their culture, their language, or any topic that is of importance for them. In this way, the project garners a natural intrigue regarding topics of personal significance and at the same time generates awareness for important issues that have been brought up by other members.
So far we have a few thousand registered members already in more than 100 different countries who report continuously in the forum. In our national forums one can read and comment on reports, see pictures and videos, and learn about cultures and stereotypes.
We also discuss global, political, environmental, and religious topics, and share both our common and our differing point of views.
Furthermore, we work together on common projects by way of the internet. Our projects are designed to help others who are learning languages, to organize our meetings, and to work on screenplays for our film projects.
Since 2007 we also provide a Junior Area on our website, enabling the internet-based exchange of young students (up to age of 16) worldwide.
Our communication board is open for everyone who shares the idea of intercultural exchange.
